Marble Falls boys soccer hosts alumni match

Mustangs of old and new will take to the pitch at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, in the program’s annual boys soccer alumni game at Mustang Stadium. There is no admission.

The current Mustangs, who are the defending District 25-4A champions, will face players who helped build the winning tradition entrusted to the current roster. The alumni match has been around for more than a decade and was started by former coach Michael Nave. And the athletes expect to be able to play, current head coach Rick Hoover said.

“It’s a tradition to get together,” he said. “It’s kind of like a homecoming for us. We usually have a big turnout.”

It’s not unusual to have as many 35 make their way to Mustang Stadium, and Hoover is bracing for at least that many this year.

“We had quite a few at the (season opening win against Del Valle 2-1 Dec. 18),” he said. “It keeps the alumni who were kids and young adults connected through the program. These kids are so connected to Mustang soccer. They love it.”

Fans will recognize several players, some who graduated as recently as 2023.

“Some of our current players have older brothers (who will play),” the coach said. “It’s a big event for our soccer program.”

Meanwhile, the current players, who were enjoying a five-day mandatory break by the University Interscholastic League, will play their way back into game shape during the contest.

Hoover said he has received emails and messages from alumni asking the date and time of the contest, noting several plan their holiday around it.

“It’s a night of celebration,” he said. “They’re excited for us.”
